Tiger Trot 5K Deadline is Near Run/Walk Event is April 28
On April 28, for the seventh year in a row, Central Elementary School’s PTA—with help from a boatload of volunteers, alumni and current students— put together a 5K and 1K walk/run at the Edgewater school on Stepney’s Lane.
It’s pretty fun.
This is a race for everyone. Literally. Since earlier this spring, there have been groups of once-sedentary folks who are running their very first 5K (roughly 3.2 miles). There will be those who run each year because they have children at the school. There will be children who run it each year, and those for whom it is a first-time experience. And of course, there will be the athletes who use the closed course as a quick weekend run.
There are a number of age divisions, especially for elementary-age children, and prizes and trophies for each division winner.
The money raised from the event goes to support ongoing PTA programs at the school. In years past, Tiger Trot money has been earmarked for new technology, a rock wall in the gymnasium, new library books and more. The PTA can raise upwards of $25,000 with this event.
This race attracts over 500 participants and volunteers. The course is closed, so there will be no running on county roads. The course winds through the education compound that includes Central Elementary, Central Special, South River High and Central Middle school. It is a well-run race and everyone who participates — even those who have never entered a race and walk the whole thing — are cheered on by volunteers and spectators.
The Navy Sprint football team will be on site to inspire the young (and old) throughout the race. For several years, they have run the race, volunteered along the course and pretended to “race” people through those sometimes difficult last steps at the finish line. Plus, you’ve never seen the Macarana danced like they do, with hundreds of elementary school children in the mix.
This year, there is chip timing, where each running will receive a souvenir chip to keep.
As with years’ past, there is a pre-race spaghetti dinner and silent auction on April 27 a 5:30 p.m. Don’t forget to bring your checkbook. There are prizes for everyone, vacations homes, and baskets for beach-goers, artists, gardeners, you name it.
