South River Senior Nabs Coveted National Merit Scholarship

Will Ewingof South River High School was one of two county seniors to earn a National Merit Scholarship award for 2012. Ewing is set to attend Case Western University where he will pursue computer science studies.

Ewing was part of a cohort of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) students who began the pilot program four years ago that eventually turned into the STEM Magnet high school program at South River. In all, roughly 50 students will graduate with STEM cords on June 1 at the Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro.

According to a media release from the Anne Arundel County Board of Education, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation gives student awards ranging from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

The other student in the county is Christopher Eurle of Severna Park High School who will study medicine at the University of Maryland.

In all, there are 4,800 students from across the country who will be awarded scholarships totalling $35 million this year.
