Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Learn more about the Chesapeake Bay area and share your enthusiasm for nature with others by becoming a volunteer at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater MD. SERC is looking for volunteers to support its hands-on K-12, public education programs and ongoing ecological research on the Chesapeake Bay. Volunteers minimum age 16, educational opportunities accommodating various interests and schedules include: field trip assistants, canoe guides, story tellers, aquarium maintenance team, flyer distributors, toddler program organizers, fundraisers, and graphic designers. SERC provides volunteer training and continuing educational experiences. Annapolis Maritime Museum. The Museum needs volunteers to expand its innovative environmental education program, conduct tours to the historic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, restore wooden boats, interpret the Museum’s exhibits to the public, and help with the winter seminar series, the summer concert series (featuring performers such as Calico Jack and the Pyrates Royale,) and lend a helping hand to events like the Annapolis Oyster Roast in March and the Boatyard Beach Bash in September. Potential volunteers can enjoy refreshments and beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay as they learn more about these and other opportunities to have fun while doing good for the community. - 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. June 16, Volunteer Open House: Annapolis Maritime Museum, located at 723 Second St., Annapolis, MD 21403, invites all current and prospective volunteers to gather for a celebration of this past year’s achievements and a preview of the year ahead at the Volunteer Open House. Parking is available at Horn Point Harbor Marina, 105 Easter Ave.
Anne Arundel County Animal Control. Animal control provides a variety of services to the community, including adoption and foster programs for the benefit of domestic animals and offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that are available to assist the agency in carrying out its mission. Volunteers may perform many helpful tasks including, but not limited to, hands on interaction with the animals, showing animals to prospective adopters, assisting customers, answering phones, filing, photography and multi-media tasks. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, be able to meet the 16 hour per month requirement of volunteer service hours and be prepared to comply with all volunteer policies at Animal Control. Anne Arundel County Fair. The Fair is an all-volunteer nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization bringing family entertainment, competition and education to people of all ages in Anne Arundel County and surrounding areas. USO Outreach Center, Ft Meade. USO is a non profit organization serving the military and their families through a variety of events and activities, many of which are supported by volunteers. We need volunteers with the skills or experience for the following areas: Administration, Scheduling, Decorating, Event Planning, Outreach, Photography, Property, Publicity and Website. Specific events and activities for which need your help are: Latin Beats, BUNCO, Health/Fitness, Sweetheart Dinner Dance, Children’s Fall Festival, and more. International Environmental Data Rescue Organization. IEDRO is a nonprofit whose mission is to locate, rescue and digitize historic environmental data before it is lost forever. The old data when digitized and provided to the world’s scientists, researchers and educators will save many lives throughout the world. Needed are a volunteer part-time office manager, writers, JAVA & PYTHON Programmers, grant writers, translators (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Italian, Russian, Farsi), newsletter deputy editor, keying volunteers, presenters/lecturers, meteorologists, hydrologists, climatologists, earth scientists, teachers/educators, PowerPoint experts, folks who are familiar with twitter, Facebook, blogs and other modern communication devices and systems. Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. Serving all of Central Maryland, the Girl Scouts help girls develop courage, confidence,character and leadership skills that they will use throughout their lives. Girl Scout volunteering offers many flexible options, for both individuals and groups, whether you want to work directly with the girls throughout the year or lend expertise for a specific short-term project or event, even if your schedule allows you to only give a few hours. Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (UCF). The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults provides free support programs, education, and resources to benefit young adults affected by cancer, as well as their family and friends, while promoting awareness and prevention of cancer. The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults relies on volunteers to help us spread our message hope and fight. Youth Golf Network. The Youth Golf Network is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, charitable organization founded in 2007 that promotes the game of golf to women and youth from many socioeconomic backgrounds. Through the game of golf, youth will become actively engaged in the social fabric of their community, and derive direct health benefits that improve their quality of life, and most importantly, have their lives enhanced by learning a different method of facing their demanding and challenging circumstances with enthusiasm and strength.
