Isn’t it enough that we already have Mrs. Maryland America Teresa Scanlon living in South County? Apparently not, because the new Ms. Maryland Senior America 2012 is Mahal Maria May of Davidsonville.

What’s more is that Ms. Maryland Senior 2011 was Jean Milazzo of Friendship.

Must be something in the water that is putting all of these beautiful women at the top of the judges’ lists when selecting a winner.

Ms. Maryland Senior 2012 Mahal Maria May was recently recognized at a breakfast at the South County Senior Center.

May will compete in the Ms. Senior America competition in Atlantic City on Oct. 7. There she will perform a hula in authentic costume for her talent. The event also includes an evening gown competition and an interview with judges.

May is a member of the South County Showstoppers.

There is something of a history for South County women to win Ms. Maryland Senior. With May, a total of six winners have included Mei Yu Green of Gambrills, Phyllis Bilhuber of Annapolis, Marcie Davis of Dundalk (representing the state of Delaware), and Joyce Clautice of Annapolis.

Ms. Senior America is a pageant competition for women 60 and above.

According to a media release from the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging, May  volunteers for many community projects including “Bountiful Backpacks” with the South Anne Arundel Rotary Club, where each Friday afternoon the neediest children at two elementary schools are sent home with backpacks full of non-perishable food items to sustain the children and their families through the weekend. May and Rotary Club members serve more than 60 children and their families every week. She also helps to prepare and deliver 125 bag lunches to the Light House Shelter each month, tutors children and foreign language speaking adults in reading and English, and performs with the Show Stoppers among other activities.

Congratulations to Ms. Maryland Senior 2012 Mahal Maria May!
