Three South Maryland Baseball Teams Vie for District Titles, State Championships

A group of 11 boys, 10- to 11-years-old swept the All Star District IV Little League

South Maryland 10-11 District IV winners.

Tournament, 42-2, over four days, advancing their team to State Finals in Easton Maryland. The state tournament begins on July 14.

Coaches said that every player, Cam Bryant Rees, Brian Connolly, Tommy Dennis, Brian DuVol, Alex Greene, Keaton Goetzger, Kyle Goetzger, (brothers), Nikko Nolte, Patrick O’Farrell, Matthew Palumbo and ‘Topher Spindler contributed to the win.

In the final game, the boys beat Laurel 13-0, completing their sweep. In that game, South Maryland posted nine of their runs in the bottom of the first inning, leaving little doubt as to the outcome.

There was also plenty of drama throughout the night as pitcher Kyle Goetzger tried for a perfect game for the second time in two years. Coach Joe Loschiavo said that last year Kyle also pitched a perfect game in the 9-10 year-old All Start District IV Tournament.

Kyle wasn’t the only player with a serious game. The South Maryland defense played three straight error-less games.

For the final out in the tournament, Kyle’s twin, shortstop Keaton Goetzger stretched left to nab a fast-moving ground ball. Keaton then threw to first baseman Tommy Dennis, who made the out at first, helping Kyle secure his career-second perfect game.

Loschiavo said that his pitching staff was outstanding, throwing two no hitters and one two-hitter over four games. He said that the defense was solid while the offense took advantage of nearly every opportunity.

“Every player contributed to the tournament victory,” he said.

The 9-10 South Maryland Little League Allstar team won on Thursday night against Arbutus 6-5. They advance to the state tournament which begins on July 14 in Waldorf. The team manager is Sean Mulcahy and coaches are Danny Moltz and Chuck Carter.

The game came down to the final out; and South Maryland hung on for the win.
