South Maryland 10U All-Star Team Advances in State Tournament
The South Maryland 10U All-Star team has won two consecutive games in the Maryland State Tournament. A win tonight against Frederick National Little League (District 2) advances them to the Championship game which will be played on Friday, July 20.
Tonight’s game is at Stethem fields in Waldorf at 5:30 p.m. Here is a run down on the past two games. Congratulations, and good luck tonight.
Sunday July 15
The South Maryland 9-10 All-Stars defeated District 1 Champions Hagerstown Federal 10-9 in seven innings. Nate Vermillion, Sean O’Connor, Josh Akers, and Mike Morley combined to pitch for South Maryland. Federal scored one run in the top of the first inning. South Maryland took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning and would never trail again.
South Maryland built a 9-7 lead after three innings. Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth inning. Federal tallied two in the top of the sixth; when South Maryland couldn’t score in the bottom of the inning the game was tied 9-9 and headed to extra innings. South Maryland held Federal scoreless in the top of the seventh.
With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the seventh Chris Sheridan beat out an infield hit. Jackson Ruckman then lined a single down the left field line. The runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball before Josh Akers ended the game with a line drive walk off hit. Vermillion and O’Connor had three hits each and Preston Moltz contributed a double while catching all seven innings on a very hot and humid day.
Monday July 16
The 9-10 All-Stars beat District 7 Champions Bethesda 12-8. Bryce Marcalus, Chris Sheridan, and Josh Akers pitched for South Maryland. Akers was particularly strong over the last three innings. Vermillion led the way offensively with four hits, Akers provide three, and Moltz, Morley, and O’Connor each had two. The South Maryland catching was strong again as Moltz made a smart play to erase a runner attempting to steal and Vermillion had a nice tag on a play at the plate.
