Thieves Make Off with $100K of Copper Wiring From County Parks

Police are investigating a rash of copper thefts from wiring out of lighting poles at area ball-fields, including Davidsonville Park on Patuxent River Road. According to an email from the Davidsonville Athletic Association (DAA), the thieves have made off with over $100,000 worth of copper wiring from nine ball-fields.
DAA along with other sports organizations were notified about the issue  by Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks in an attempt to shed light on the crime and to help identify the crooks.

Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said detectives are working closely with representatives from Rec and Parks on a daily basis regarding the exchange of information and security suggestions. They are also in touch with area scrap metal dealers to make them aware of the issue.

The email from Rec and Parks said the money used to replace the stolen wire is depleting the Department’s Parks Renovation budget.

Anyone that sees suspicious activity at county schools, parks or utility sites can call the Southern District Police Station 410-222-1960 or 911. Police, particularly those on the midnight shift, have made this a priority investigation.

For your safety, do not touch any lighting poles or electric poles that have been tampered with and do not approach any suspicious individuals in the parks.
