Edgewater Man Killed in Aug. 16 Chopper Crash in Afghanistan

The Pentagon announced Monday that Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick D. Feeks, 28, of Edgewater, was killed in an Aug. 16 helicopter crash in Afghanistan. In all, seven service members died in the crash northeast of Kandahar, Afghanistan.

According to reporting by the Associated Press, Feeks enlisted in the Navy in 2006. He completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training and advance training. He had served with a West Coast SEAL unit since May 2008.

A U.S. Navy news release said that Feeks’ awards and decorations include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Feeks previously served in Iraq.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Feeks (nee Booth) and his parents, Thomas and Virginia Feeks.

The others who died in the crash include Chief Warrant Officer Brian D. Hornsby, 37, of Melbourne, Fla., Chief Warrant Officer Suresh N. A. Krause, 29, of Cathedral City, Calif., Petty Officer Technician 1st Class Sean P. Carson, 32, of Des Moines, Wash.,Sgt. Richard A. Essex, 23, of Kelseyville, Calif., Sgt. Luis A. Oliver Galbreath, 41, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Special Warfare Operator Petty Officer 2nd Class David J. Warsen, 27, of Kentwood, Mich.
