Novelist Lynn Franklin Coming to Dunkirk Jewelers for Book Signing
This Thursday (Aug. 19). at 7 p.m., Dickinson Jewelers will host an evening with local writer Lynn Franklin, author of The Blue Diamond at its Dunkirk store located at 10286 Southern Maryland Boulevard.
This free event will include a presentation by Franklin including a reading from The Blue Diamond, a question and answer session, bookmark signings, door prizes and more.
According to Dickinson Jewelers, the inspiration for The Blue Diamond came from a visit by Franklin to Dickinson Jewelers. Franklin and her husband, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author Jon Franklin, planned to replace the cubic zirconia in Lynn’s engagement ring with a ruby. As they waited to view a selection of rubies, Franklin was drawn to a pair of unmounted blue gemstones.
“I knew before I even asked that they must be diamonds,” Franklin said. “There was no mistaking that sparkle.”
Franklin had never seen colored diamonds, and the dazzling gemstones set her creative mind whirling. What would happen if she centered her mystery around one of the rarest gemstones: a large, natural blue diamond?
The arrival of the rubies temporarily pushed the thought aside and the next time Franklin visited the store the blue diamonds were gone. But she never forgot that Caribbean blue color or the way the stones reflected the light. A week later, she began writing The Blue Diamond.
Franklin’s novel is set in fictional Osprey Beach, an addition to the very real Twin Beaches of Calvert County: North Beach and Chesapeake Beach. When the jewelry store learned of Franklin’s love of Southern Maryland, family, and of course- jewelry, an evening with Franklin, held in a local jewelry store was a perfect fit.
