Pedestrian Hit on Central Avenue Wednesday in Critical Condition
Lt. Doyle Batten, Jr. sent a media release regarding the accident on Central Avenue near West Shore Road around 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday. According to the report, a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Michael Joseph Maszcenski, Jr., 62, of Stevensville, struck a pedestrian, Susan Blanchard Harris, 51, of Edgewater, after Harris ran into the roadway. Harris was taken by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition. There was no indication of her condition on Wednesday morning.
Batten said that the 2005 Ford, driven by Maszcenski, was heading east on Central Avenue when Harris ran into the roadway from the right where she hit the right side of the truck. Then the truck’s right side mirror hit Harris’ head and broke away.
Maszcenski stopped at the scene and awaited emergency medical assistance.
Batten said that the primary contributing factor in the accident was pedestrian error. Police found no indication that alcohol or speed played a role in the crash. Officers from the Traffic Safety Section are investigating whether any secondary circumstances, including possible medical issues, may have played a role. The accident remains under investigation.
The roadway was closed on Wednesday night for an extended period, disrupting the end of the Wednesday night rush hour.
