Later this week, 29 talented Anne Arundel County high school musicians will fulfill the dream of a lifetime. As a result of a rigorous audition and the partnership that exists between the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), these accomplished musicians have won the opportunity to perform alongside the professional musicians of the world-class BSO. One student, Tony Guarino, has garnered the top prize of performing as marimba soloist.

The successful collaboration that exists between Anne Arundel and the BSO is a partnership that has lasted for 28 years. Anne Arundel County is the only county in the state that can boast of the longevity of such a partnership. Students who have participated in this program over the years have gone on to careers as professional orchestral musicians and teachers.

“To a person, they cite the BSO Side-by-Side experience as the highlight of their high school musical years,” said Amy Cohn, AACPS’ Coordinator of Music. “The Side-by-Side experience is a real-life experience unlike any other that can be provided for young musicians. Students perform professional caliber music, are coached by musicians from the orchestra, and perform a concert on a world-class stage for an audience of their peers.”

The audience will consist of 2,200 AACPS high school and middle school students, who themselves aspire to be participants in the program.
