Know a Great Teacher? Nominate Him/Her for ‘Teacher of the Year’
Do you know a great teacher? Someone whose energy and enthusiasm for the job never ceases to amaze you? Someone who strives to be personally and professionally the best? Someone who is always trying to reach that struggling student and raise expectations for the others?
You should take the time to nominate him/her for “Teacher of the Year.”
Nominations for Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year can come from parents, administrators, anyone really, (except for the teacher him/herself).
Please note, this can’t be a surprise. You will need to notify the teacher to get the necessary information required in the packet (resume/C.V., photo, etc). In fact, if they make it past the first level of nominations, they will have to write a few essays about teaching.
The winner for Anne Arundel County will then go up against other Teachers of the Year from each county in Maryland. If they win Maryland Teacher of the Year, they will go on to compete for National Teacher of the Year.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Nominate. They have to be nominated first.
Anne Arundel County has had some great entries in years past, including three from South County. In 2011, Southern Middle School’s Laura Groo won the Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year. Two others from South County include Alicia Appel in 2007 and Michael Bell in 2004.
Along with the Teacher of the Year, businesses that worked closely with schools will also be recognized at an April dinner and reception. Nominate businesses by following the links below.

AACPS, Chamber of Commerce Taking Nominations for Teacher of Year, Top Business Partners
As the calendar year begins to wind down, another season is just getting started. Nominations are now available online for the 2013 Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year and 2013 Business Partnership Awards.
Nominees and winners will be honored at the 2013 Excellence in Education awards banquet, set for April 29 at the BWI Marriott hotel in Linthicum. Last year a record 51 educators were honored at the awards banquet. In addition, seven businesses and individuals were recognized for the partnerships they have created with schools across the county.
The 2013 AACPS Teacher of the Year will represent the county in the Maryland State Teacher of the Year competition.
The Excellence in Education Awards are presented annually in partnership by Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce. In addition to outstanding teachers, the awards honor local businesses that have forged critical partnerships that directly benefit AACPS’ nearly 75,500 students.
