West Rhode Riverkeeper Asks, ‘How Are We Doing?’

The West/Rhode Riverkeeper is asking for the public’s input on what they’re doing and the direction of their organization. They’ve developed a survey to get feeback from the community. It’s short, just 10 questions, and it will hopefully help the organization as they move into the future. Visit the survey here.

In 2012, the West/Rhode Riverkeeper hosted a wade-in. Photo courtesy the West/Rhode Riverkeeper.

West/Rhode Riverkeeper Chris Trumbauer said that 2012 has been the organization’s most successful year. They are asking for the public’s input because they want to work on a strategic planning process this year. The deadline to complete the survey is Friday at 5 p.m.

The West/Rhode Riverkeeper’s office is one of 11 Waterkeeper Alliance

partners in the state of Maryland. The Waterkeeper’s Alliance was founded in 1999 by Robert F. Kennedy and several waterkeeper organizations as a global movement of “on the water” advocates who patrol and protect over 100,000 miles of rivers, streams and coastlines in America and around the world.

The first waterkeeper started as the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association, an association of fishermen and recreational anglers whose purpose was to advocate for the river. Starting in 1966, they took on many of the nation’s biggest industrial polluters—and won. In 1983, the Hudson River group hired the first full-time riverkeeper to patrol the Hudson River (New York).

The Hudson Riverkeeper‘s success led others to found riverkeeper organizations, and eventually the Waterkeeper Alliance. Waterkeeper organizations combine first-hand knowledge of the waterway with advocacy, education and action.

In all, there are over 200 local Waterkeeper organizations around the world. In South County, we have the West/Rhode Riverkeeper, the South Riverkeeper and the Patuxent Riverkeeper. Here’s the list of all the waterkeepers in the state of Maryland:
