Music Play-a-Thon at South River Saturday Includes an Evening Concert for the Public
Three of South River High School’s bands—orchestra, concert and jazz—will participate in a nine-hour Play-a-Thon on Jan. 12 at the school in Edgewater. The day will conclude with a concert from 4 to 5 p.m. Even coordinators anticipate about 100 students and 35 adult musicians/volunteers to help out. The event gets underway at 8 a.m.
The day of music is an opportunity for professional conductors and musicians to come to the school to mentor the students in order to enhance skills, presence and cohesiveness. The event will be both fun and educational.
The community at large is invited to come hear the concert at 4 p.m.
South River Music Chair Gerry Cavanaugh said that students are looking forward to a great day of music and learning.
“An added bonus is the opportunity for the students to get pledges as fundraising to help defray the cost of the spring competition trip to South Carolina and some other personal music expenses,” Cavanaugh said.
The high school’s music program has made a commitment to serve the South River community, so the event will include food collection drive to support the local food bank.
The event is coordinated by the South River Music Boosters. Family members, pledgers and other guests are invited to volunteer throughout the day.
