Meeting for High School Juniors Interested in Student Board of Ed Position Set for Jan.16
High School juniors in good academic standing can learn more about how to become the 2013-2014 student member on the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County at an informational meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 16 at 7 p.m.
The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Board of Education’s administrative building at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.
The student member Board of Ed position was created in 1974 from a desire by students to have a voice in the decision-making process. The Anne Arundel County’s student member is the only one in the nation on a local board who has full voting rights. The high school senior serves a one-year term beginning July 1 and ending June 30. In addition, the individual receives a $6,000 scholarship.
The nomination process for the 2013-2014 seat begins on February 1 and ends at 5 p.m. on February 25. The Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils will elect the candidate on April 5. That candidate’s name will then be forwarded to Governor Martin O’Malley who will make the appointment.
Nick Lefavor, a senior at Old Mill High School, is the current student member. Several seniors from South County have held this prestigious position including:
- Jillian Buck (2011-12) South River High, of Crofton
- Katie Scruggs (2010-2011) South River High, of Davidsonville
- Alena Sanders (2009-2010) Southern High, of Lothian
- Miecha Werwie (1991-92), Southern High
- Lisa Battle (1976-77), Southern High
