The South River High School Orchestra, Concert Band and Jazz Band held a nine-hour Play-A-Thon last Saturday. The event began at 8 a.m. and ended with a concert at 4 p.m. In all, 68 students and 29 adult volunteers participated.

“The Play-A-Thon was designed to be a fun and educational event where performing groups came together to enhance skills. Professional guest conductors and musicians from the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Naval Academy and the community volunteered their time to provide instruction and direction. We had a great day of music and learning!” said Jerry Cavanaugh, South River’s Instrumental Music Director.

There were about 100 musicians, students and professionals, at South River on Saturday. Photo by Karen Hough.

Organizers extend their thanks to the four guest conductors: Mary Pitta from Anne Arundel County Public Schools; Lynda Dembowski from the US Naval Academy; Dr. Anna Bennewig from the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra; and Dr. Christopher Cicconi from the Pine Crest School and Broward Symphony in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The event was coordinated by the South River Music Boosters. For more information about South River High School’s music program, please visit
