Two South River Club Volleyball Teams Win Big at Weekend Tournament
Whether because of the 2012 Olympic Gold won by Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor, or just a continuation of the growth volleyball has seen since its founding at the turn of the 20th Century, the sport is definitely growing in popularity.
Locally, there are volleyball teams for both South County high schools, Southern and South River. And, there are several recreational leagues in the area that play during the high school’s off season. Some of the local athletic associations also have teams that play in the fall.
One of the clubs that has popped up recently is the South River Volleyball Club, a competitive program for girls 10 to 16 years old. Their goal is to prepare athletes for high school and collegiate level play. The club was formed last year.
In the second tournament of the season, two of their U14 teams took Gold and Silver at the Maryland Juniors Volleyball Tournament last Sunday. This is a great accomplishment not only for the girls and the team, but also for the fledgling club.
The Surge team (U14-2), coached by Ernie Seigrist and Julie Molster, placed first in the Maryland Juniors 14s Club Tournament. The Storm (U14-1), coached by Paula Ebnet and Kevin Hughes, placed 2nd in the Maryland Juniors 14’s Open Tourmanent.
The tournaments were played at the Sportsplex in Jessup. The girls from these teams are all middle-schoolers.
The Surge roster includes:
