South River and Southern Basketball Teams Get Post-Season Brackets

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association(MPSSAA) is the governing body responsible for post-season play among Maryland high school sports teams. Divisions are based on the size of the school’s student population. Southern plays in Division 2A while South River plays in Division 4A. On Sunday, the MPSSAA released the brackets for the February-March high school basketball playoff games.

The South River girls team is having a standout season with 19 wins, 3 losses. In the 16 in-county games the Lady Seahawks have played this season, they are undefeated. The girls have just one more game to play in their regular season— against the number one seed in post-season: Arundel. That game will take place on Wednesday at Arundel in Gambrills. Last Thursday—Valentine’s Day—they played Meade High School and won, 56-39.

It looks like the prospects for an exciting post-season are in place. The girls (seeded #2) got a bye for the first round. They’ll play the winner of the Broadneck vs. Meade game in the second round (on Seahawks home court, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.). Earlier in the season, the girls dispatched Broadneck 61-53.

The #1 seed, North Point High, won’t have an opportunity to meet South River unless both teams make it though to the regional semi-final. Arundel (#3) could meet South River as soon as the third round of post-season play.

The Southern girls basketball team has posted 8 wins and 13 losses for the season. On Thursday, they made it past North East High, 58-31.  In the MPSSAA playoff draw, the Southern Girls (seeded#6) will play their first post-season game against Lackey High school, (seeded #11). The Bulldawgs will host that game in Harwood.

If the girls make it past Lackey, they’ll meet Largo High (seeded #3) in the second round. Largo got a bye in the first game of post-season play.

The Southern boys posted 12 wins and 9 losses during the regular season—a terrific improvement over last year. Their last game of the regular season was a win, 66 to 54, against North County High on their challenger’s turf.

In the post-season, the Bullog boys are seeded #5 in Division 2A South. They’ll host Marriotts Ridge (#12) in the first round of play. Unless first seed Oakland Mills has a really bad day, they’ll likely face off against Southern in the third round of play. That game will likely pose the biggest challenge for Southern, and the boys will need to be on their game to pull out a win.

The South River boys basketball team have posted 4 wins and 18 losses in the regular season. They’ll meet Arundel at 6:45 p.m. for the last game of the regular season on Wednesday. Last week on Feb. 14, the boys lost 42-64 to Meade High.

South River is seeded #8 in the playoff brackets. They’ll host Glen Burnie (#9) in first round of the post season on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. Back at the end of January, the Seahawks met Glen Burnie and fell to the Gophers, 44 to 59.

If the Seahawks can make it past Glen Burnie, they’ll play the #1 seed, North Point High in the second round, a tough game for early in the tournament.
