Fatal Head-On Crash in the Early Morning on Saturday Near Owings
One man was killed and another suffered serious injuries in a two-car crash on Chesapeake Beach Road near Sansbury Road in Owings early Saturday morning, according to Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Lt. Richard Duvall.
Police said that at 5:44 a.m., a 2006 Ford Taurus driven by Ronald Joseph Lignelli, 61, of Chesapeake Beach, was traveling eastbound on Chesapeake Beach Road when it crossed the double yellow line into the path of a 1999 Ford Expedition driven by Andre Lavar Mackall, 33, of Owings. The cars hit head on and came to rest in the westbound lane near the shoulder. Both vehicles had heavy front end damage.
Anne Arundel County Police and deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene where they found the Expedition on its side and in flames. Firefighters from Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Company arrived and pronounced the Taurus driver, Lignelli, dead at the scene.
Bystanders had pulled the driver of the Expedition, Mackall, from his vehicle because of the fire. He was taken to Prince Georges Trauma Center. He is listed in stable condition.
According to Maryland court records, Lignelli had a troubled driving history dating to the 1980s. Most recently, he was arrested for driving on a suspended license and without insurance or registration. Duvall said that Traffic Safety Section took over the investigation, which is continuing at this time. It is unknown if excessive speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
