UPDATE: Police Confirm Fatality in Davidsonville Car Versus Bicyclist Crash on Wednesday Evening
Update, Thursday, August 22 11:30 a.m.
According to Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy, Patricia Cunningham, 50 of Annapolis, died after a motor vehicle collided with her bicycle on Riva Road just before 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21 in the area of Riva Road near Beards Point Road in Davidsonville.
Mulcahy said that a Honda Odessy van driven by Whitney Anne Decesaris, 37 of Huntington, and Cunningham made contact as both were traveling in the southbound lane of Riva Road. Due to the serious injuries sustained by Cunningham, investigators from the Traffic Safety Section responded to the accident scene and assumed the investigation.
The driver of the van was uninjured and remained at the scene after the collision. Cunningham was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she later died of injuries.
Mulchay said the cause of the crash appears to be driver error and that neither alcohol nor speed appears to be factors in the crash. Police said that no charges have been filed in the incident at this time however the State’s Attorney’s Office has been consulted.
Riva Road between Beards Creek Road and Sharpsburg Drive was closed for several hours on Wednesday night while the accident was under investigation.

Anne Arundel County Police Department spokesman Lt. Doyle Batten said that a car accident on Riva Road near Maple Creek Lane in Davidsonville left a bicyclist with serious injuries. The accident happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. When police and fire arrived, they learned that a motor vehicle had collided with a bicyclist as both were traveling on Riva Road.
Police called in investigators from the Traffic Safety Section because the injuries to the bicyclist were serious. The driver of the motor vehicle (police did not indicate if it was a car or truck) remained at the scene. Riva Road was closed in both directions from Beards Point Road to Maple Creek Lane while police worked the scene.
Batten said that the call is active at this time, and information is rapidly evolving. No further information will be released concerning the bicyclist, the motor vehicle operator and/or other circumstances of this incident pending additional investigation.
