The drawing will be held at 5 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Capt. Avery Museum’s annual Oyster Festival. You need not be present to win.

It was 29 years ago that a gathering of Shady Side history buffs decided to become the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society. They elected Virginia White Fitz, whose book, “The Spirit of Shady Side” was the inspiration for the group. Over the course of the next five years, they worked to raise money and purchase the Capt. Avery museum property.

In 1988, four years after their founding, they started to host this raffle as a fundraiser. At first, they gave away a truck. But when trucks got too expensive to buy, they began to raffle off half of the collected funds. They sold 2,000 tickets for $10, then gave away $10K, keeping $10,000 for the museum.

A few years back, they reduced the ticket price to $5, and gave away $5,000. That remains the case today.

Over the years, they have used the money to maintain the museum, purchase artifacts and pay off the building’s mortgage.

This is the 25th year for the raffle.

By the way, best of luck to all of you. I’m feeling lucky this year!
