The Arc advocates for and supports County citizens with developmental disabilities. Volunteers are needed to serve on the board of directors, help with fund raising, assist in the office, and to help with special events. Volunteers, 16 years and older, are also needed as gardening assistants at the Arc’s sensory garden in Annapolis, including plant care, patio maintenance, planting trees/shrubs, etc. and to help with leaf and yard maintenance at 30 homes the Arc manages throughout the County. Hispanic Heritage Festival, Sunday, October 13, 2013
In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage month, the Center of Help is hosting the inaugural Hispanic Heritage Festival from 1:00PM to 4:00PM,Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center in Annapolis, MD. This family friendly event is designed to bring the community together to celebrate with live music, entertainment, food, children’s activities and information exhibits by city, county and community organizations representing health and human services, police, fire and emergency/safety and more. This is a great opportunity for New American residents and citizens to learn about services and support available from a wide variety of organizations. Londontowne Symphony Orchestra
The mission of the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is to provide high quality classical and light classical music concerts for the enrichment and enjoyment of the residents of Anne Arundel County and surrounding areas, and to provide an opportunity for student, amateur and professional musicians to learn and grow under the guidance of a professional music director. The LSO needs volunteers to help with the marketing and promotion of the orchestra. Assistance with writing press releases and newsletters, spreading concert news to print and online media, and promoting concerts in retirement centers and other market concentrations is greatly needed. · 3:00 – 5:00pm, Sun., October 6, 2013, Concert: The Londontowne Symphony Orchestra’s 10th season starts at Historic London Town and Gardens this year. The performance will overlook the South River while occurring in London Town’s ornamental gardens. The audience will enjoy a wide selection of songs with one piece written specifically for this concert. In case of inclement weather the concert will occur at South River High School.
The Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County in cooperation with the Arundel County Public Schools Central Office Campaign is collecting nonperishable food and plastic/paper items (no glass, please) at its Heritage Office Complex location at Suite 130, 2666 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD., 7:30 am – 5:00 pm Mon. – Fri. The collected items are donated to the Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank. Cash donations are also being accepted. The Junior League of Annapolis, Inc. will host its seventh annual Jennifer Summers Barrett Memorial Run. Volunteers for the Run 5K fun run/walk event are needed on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. This event is sponsored by Mairead M. O’Reilly, DDS, MS Orthodontics. All funds raised benefit the programs of Junior League of Annapolis, Inc. The event is open to the community and is appropriate for competitive runners, walkers, strollers and pets. This annual race will start at the Red Maple Pavilion at Quiet Waters Park and will feature a 3-mile run along the park’s trail. All local residents of Annapolis are invited to participate. This is a program designed to mentor youth within the Greater Parole community to help improve their academic achievement while fostering a positive attitude toward learning. Mature student volunteers, ages 18 and older, are needed to teach basic skills in math, algebra, geometry, basic computer skills, homework assistance, reading, etc. In addition, volunteers are needed to provide office assistance during the day, and help with building and grounds maintenance. Also needed are individuals with background experience and/or educational training in marketing and grant-writing. The mission of Seeds 4 Success, Inc. (S4S) is to provide children and families living in Annapolis public and subsidized housing communities with knowledge, services, relationships and experiences that help children grow into successful, healthy, and contributing adults. One of S4S’ main programs is Eastport Girls Club (EGC) which serves 5th–9th grade girls with a variety of programs. However, most of families of girls do not have personal vehicles. Thus, transportation to classes, camps, and events is an important gap Seeds 4 Success tries to address, and volunteers, age 18 and up, are being sought to fill this need. Young Leaders is a non-profit providing mentoring for students in the 5th or 6th grade and continuing through high school. Volunteers, at least 16 years of age and a junior in high school, are needed to provide mentoring services. A one-year commitment of at least 1-hour per week is required for both mentors and peer mentors. Mentor candidates must fill out a mentor application, have a personal interview, provide three references, and undergo background and motor vehicle checks. Peer Mentors serving as tutors in their schools must also have an “A” in the subject in which they will provide tutoring and a recommendation letter from a teacher.
