Fall 2013: Southern and South River Athletics—Soccer, Volleyball and Golf

Last week, we looked at Football and Field Hockey at the two South County high schools. This week, we’re checking in with Volleyball, Soccer and Golf at Southern and South River High. The big South County rivalry games will be played tonight in Volleyball and Soccer. Check below for dates, times and locations.

Volleyball

South River Girls Varsity

Head Coach Maureen Carter isn’t one to walk around with a beaming smile. But her girls’ performance this year might just change that. They’re 7-0 so far this season and ranked fifth in the state. The girls will be playing at Southern on Thursday (Oct. 3) for the South County rivalry in Harwood with a special pink night for Breast Cancer. After that they will play Severna Park at home. Severna Park bested the Seahawks in the regional semifinal in 2012, so they’ll get an opportunity to re-fight the battle on Tuesday.

  • Thu., Oct. 3, 6 p.m. vs. Southern at Southern
  • Tue., Oct. 8, 5 p.m. vs. Severna Park at home
  • Thurs. Oct. 10, 6 p.m. vs. North County in Glen Burnie
  • Mon., Oct. 14, 5 p.m. vs Chesapeake in Pasadena
  • Wed., Oct. 16, 6 p.m. vs. Old Mill in Millersville
  • Tue., Oct. 22, 6 p.m. vs. Meade at home
  • Tue., Oct. 24, 6 p.m. vs. Broadneck at home

Southern Girls Varsity

The Southern Girls are 3-4 for the season. They hosted Broadneck on Thursday where the Bruins took the game, 3-0. They’re just at the half-way point of the season, with seven games remaining.

They’re hosting South River at home Thursday night, 6  p.m. in Harwood with a special pink night for Breast Cancer survivors.

  • Thu., Oct. 3, 6 p.m. vs. South River at home
  • Tue., Oct. 8, 6 p.m. vs. Chesapeake in Pasadena
  • Thurs. Oct. 10, 6 p.m. vs. Severna Park at Severna Park
  • Mon., Oct. 14, 6 p.m. vs Meade at home
  • Wed., Oct. 16, 6 p.m. vs. Glen Burnie at home
  • Tue., Oct. 22, 6 p.m. vs. Arundel in Gambrills

Soccer

South River Girls Varsity

The Lady Seahawks are 7-2 for the season, averaging 4.5 goals per game under coach John Sis. It’s a pretty sweet reboot for the girls, who had a lot to live up to after beating Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 4 to 2, in 2012 to take the state championship.

On Thursday, they’ll meet Southern in Harwood for the big South County rivalry. Here’s the rest of the regular season schedule:

  • Thurs., Oct. 3, 5 p.m. vs. Southern High at Southern
  • Tue., Oct. 8, 7 p.m. vs. Severna Park at Severna Park
  • Thurs., Oct. 10, 5 p.m. vs. North County at North County
  • Mon., Oct. 14, 7 p.m. vs. Chesapeake High at home
  • Wed., Oct. 16, 5 p.m. vs. Old Mill at home

South River Boys Varsity

The boys team is 4-4 this season, but that number doesn’t give a true measure of how the boys have been doing on the field. In the games where they lost, they fell by the slimmest of margins, only losing by a single point in each game. In the win column though, they’re racking up the goals, most recently defeating Glen Burnie, 5 to 1, and then Northeast, 7 to 0. Here’s the rest of the regular season schedule:

  • Thurs., Oct. 3, 7 p.m. vs. Southern High at Southern
  • Mon., Oct. 7, 5 p.m. vs. Wild Lake High at home
  • Tue., Oct. 8, 5 p.m. vs. Severna Park at Severna Park
  • Thurs., Oct. 10, 7 p.m. vs. North County at North County
  • Mon., Oct. 14, 5 p.m. vs. Chesapeake High at home
  • Wed., Oct. 16, 7 p.m. vs. Old Mill at home

Southern High Girls Varsity

The girls soccer team, under the guidance of head coach Brooke Walsh, are having a great season so far, with six wins and three losses. The next three games are at home, including the big South County rivalry: Southern vs. South River in Edgewater on Thursday.

  • Thu., Oct. 3, 5 p.m. vs. South River at South River
  • Tue., Oct. 8, 7 p.m. vs. Chesapeake at home
  • Thurs. Oct. 10, 5 p.m. vs. Chesapeake Science at home
  • Mon., Oct. 14, 7 p.m. vs Meade High at Meade
  • Wed., Oct. 16, 5 p.m. vs. Glen Burnie at Glen Burnie

Southern High Boys Varsity

The Bulldog boys are 1-5 going into Thursday night’s game against South River in Edgewater. In mid-September, they beat Northeast, but since then have had trouble finding their footing, falling most recently (Oct. 1) at Broadneck.

Here’s the remaining regular season schedule:

  • Thu., Oct. 3, 7 p.m. vs. South River at South River
  • Tue., Oct. 8, 5 p.m. vs. Chesapeake at home
  • Thurs. Oct. 10, 7 p.m. vs. Chesapeake Science at home
  • Mon., Oct. 14, 5 p.m. vs Meade High at Meade
  • Wed., Oct. 16, 7 p.m. vs. Glen Burnie at Glen Burnie

Golf

South River Co-Ed Golf

The golfers at South River will be playing the county championships at Crofton on Friday, starting at 8 a.m. Over half of the team are seniors who will be leaving the team after this season, including: Kaleigh Ducharme, Drew Mergler, William Miles, Kennedy Moseley, Nick Plateck, Garrett Sauls and Jonathan Sganga. Players who make the cut for states will play at the University of Maryland on Oct. 28 an 30.
