Fundraiser for Deale Marine Corporal Greviously Injured in July Accident
Rebecca Fletcher, a corporal with the United States Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 1, suffered a grave injury in July when the motorcycle she was riding crashed into a car in California. Fletcher lost her leg in the accident, which she survived only due to the efforts of three marines (whom she didn’t know or work with) when they stopped on the side of the road after the crash and applied a tourniquet to the injury.
In addition, Fletcher fractured her pelvis and suffered a neck injury, which required fusion surgery. She’s got a long road ahead, one which will require months of rehabilitation.
Her family is asking for the public’s help to defray some of the medical and support costs and have set up a YouCaring page to help out.
She’s a local, having graduated from Southern High (Class of 2005).
Many people from our area knew Fletcher before she decided to become a Marine. She delivered newspapers—on rollerblade—in Mason’s Beach while she was in middle school. She rode horses out of Oak Crest Farm and worked at Perfect Pet Resort in Lothian.
Her parents, Greg and Debby Fletcher, and her siblings, Jamie and Nick and other family and friends are forever grateful to the Marines who stopped at the accident to render aid. Without their help, Fletcher may not have survived the trauma of the accident. You can read more about it here.
Fletcher’s mom, Debby, has been at her side since the June 7 accident in California. In addition, the family has set up a fundraiser at Stan and Joe’s Saloon in Edgewater for Nov. 2. This “Benefit Becky” event will run from 4 p.m. until closing. Enjoy music, food, drinks, auction and raffle—and help a family through a difficult time.
They’re looking for items for the auction—so if you have something, please give generously. They have already acquired a set of Redskins vs. Dallas tickets. Great auction items make for a great auction outcome.
Editor’s Note: Our best wishes in your recovery Becky Fletcher.
