DEC 2013: South County Senior Center Activities and Events

The South County Senior Center is one of seven senior centers operated by Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities. It is located at 27 Stepneys Lane in Edgewater; the phone number is 410.222.1927. Membership, which is free and available for persons age 55 and older,  is required for participation in programs.

Here is the list of events and activities for December 2013:

Wednesday, December 4, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

  • “High Fashion Jewelry Sale” ~ Featuring NEW high fashion costume jewelry. Treat yourself or give as gifts, quantities are limited. Proceeds benefit Woodland Beach VFD and Wounded Warriors Project.

Wednesday, December 4, 1 p.m.

  • “Maria Rose, from ‘RFD-TV’, and Danny Elswick” ~ present a program of your Christmas favorites.

Friday, December 6, 11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

  • South County Senior Center Computer Group” (SCSCCG) will hold its fourth meeting of the 2013-2014 season. The December meeting will include an overview of some of the many new cyber/computers, gadgets, tools, and toys for the gift list for the 2013 Holiday Season. Something for all ages and all wallets/pocketbooks.   Join fellow seniors in this open meeting and discover what they are doing with computers and digital/cyber devices. Meeting is open to ALL senior center members. Just show up. Bring a Flash/pen/jump/thumb drive to the meeting if you have one. Handouts, if any, will be digital! 

Monday, December 9, 1 p.m.

Dr. Gillian Lowe is a new doc at South River Family Medicine in Edgewater.

Dr. Gillian Lowe will present at the South County Senior Center on Monday, December 9 at 1 p.m.

  • Preparing for a Visit with Your Primary Doctor” ~Dr. Gillian Lowe, new staff member at South River Family Medicine, will be the presenter.

Monday, December 9, 1 p.m.

  • “Reiki” ~ with Jan Bridger, a Reiki Master Practitioner and Teacher. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. Reiki helps in many ways such as: wound healing, pain and inflammation, chronic conditions, or coping with life changes or losses. Reiki can balance and replenish the bodies physical, mental and emotional energies. Appointments are required, sign up at the front desk. Come and try it.

Monday, December 9, 1 p.m.

  • “Christmas Confections in America” ~ Food Historian Joyce White returns for this Christmas program. This presentation is chock-full of a variety of Christmas culinary traditions that have traveled across the Atlantic to make the American celebration what it is today.  Christmas candies, cakes, breads, drinks, and cookies are described revealing their origins and the reasons they are associated with the Christmas season.  Participants will taste an original version of the sugarplum and Twelfth Night Cake, drink some wassail, and decorate a Speculaas gingerbread cookie. Sign up as space is limited.

  • LAST DAY TO REGISTER HERE AT THE CENTER FOR WINTER AACC CLASSES. There is alternate registration information available.

Friday, December 13, 10:15 a.m.

  • “Talent Machine Co. Inc. Holiday Magic” ~ Enjoy a meal at our new local International House of Pancakes. We will then attend the 12 noon performance at St. John’s College. When signing up, please pay the $5.00 for your ticket. (You will pay for your meal on that day.)

Monday, December 16, 10 a.m.

  • “Create a Teabag or Card Holder” ~ Instructor Cynthia Keller will provide a kit for $3.00 or bring your own supplies – see display in lobby. Sign up in advance.

Monday, December 16, 1 p.m.

  • “Anne Arundel County Retired Teachers’ Chorus” ~will present their annual holiday concert.

Tuesday, December 17, 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

  • “Holiday Blitz” ~ Our annual holiday party will again be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis. Tickets are $23.00 and your menu choices are crab cake and petit filet or roast turkey. Music for listening and dancing by Greg MacDonald and his band. There will be a cash bar and door prizes. Last day to purchase tickets is December 11th.

Wednesday, December 18, 11 a.m.

  • “South  County’s Holiday Show” ~ Our Showstoppers, tap and jazz dancers will present a show that will delight and entertain you.

Wednesday, December 18, 12:30 p.m.

  • “Ice Cream Social” ~ Bring your $2.00 to purchase a delicious ice cream sundae to benefit our “Hearts of  Gold FUNdraisers.”

Wednesday, December 18, 1 p.m.

  • “Christmas Party” ~ Bobby Jones will play his music and we’ll have some surprises planned.

Friday, December 20, 10:30 a.m.

  • Christmas Party with South River High School Leadership Students” ~ The students will lead us in Christmas carols and play Christmas trivia. We’ll then have pizza for lunch. Sign up by December 18 so we know how much pizza to order.

Centers will be closed Monday, December 23rd, through Wednesday, January 1st. Center operation will resume on Thursday, January 2nd.

Friday, January 10, 10 a.m. – 3:p.m.

  • “AARP Smart Driver Course” ~ This is the new and improved AARP Driver Safety course. For AARP members the new fee is $15.00, for non AARP members the new fee is $20.00, payable to your instructor. Sign up in advance.
