Resolving to Make 2014 the Year to Get Fit at One of These Great So Co Fitness Facilities

So, you know what it takes to get fit. You just lack the wherewithal to get there. But, 2014 is feeling different. This is the year where, day-by-day, week-by-week and month-by-month, you’re going to do it. And the South River Source is here to help.

No. We won’t be doing your workout for you. But we do have some places in South County to help get you started. We’ve looked into a little of everything, yoga classes, fitness centers, martial arts studios. We’ve included any deals, open houses or specials in each paragraph, but here are some highlights:

Black Belt Academy in Dunkirk was founded by Master Kyu Jin Shim, who also runs Do Jos in St. Mary’s County, Waldorf and Prince Frederick. BBA teaches Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art. Each class runs 50-minute. The first part of the class includes an opening ceremony, meditation and a focus on terminology, followed by warm-up exercises, stretching, strength training and cardio drills and ending with sparring, partner drills and a closing. This technique includes board-breaking. Classes are offered for children and adults. BBA also offers weapons seminars on Saturdays including classes in nun-chakus, long staff, short staff, short stick, knives and swords. They’re hosting an Open House from 10 a.m to noon on Jan. 11. Sign up during the open house and they’ll waive the registration fee ($150). In addition, they’ll be offering a $9 introductory class at the event.

Body Shapers Club for Women in Deale is a fitness club with ACE certified trainers and weekly classes. They are located on Deale-Churchton Road at Swamp Circle Road. Owner Darcy Cooper has been in the fitness and personal training business for over 14 years. When you come in, Cooper will help you get started on a fitness routine, even if you’ve never had one, or are recovering from an injury or surgery. Maggie, their adorable mascot (poodle/terrier) is often on hand to cheer you on and show off some (unusual) stretches—including downward-facing dog, of course.  Three-month memberships are $120 with no initiation and no commitment.

Chesapeake Health and Fitness Club is open daily and offers classes, cardiovascular equipment, free weights and weight machines, plus personal trainers and nutrition counseling.  Check out weekly fitness tips and contests on their Facebook page. Sign up now for belly dancing classes, which roll out January 13. In 2013, they moved to Bay Front Road and added a spa next door (Body & Soul Spa) with everything from facials to massages if you need a little pampering after your workout.

Crossfit South River is a licensed CrossFit affiliate with several CrossFit classes daily. Rates are by the month, from $125 to $165. Crossfit classes are offered at 5:45 a.m. on Mon-Tue-Thu-Fri; 6 p.m. on Mon-Tue-Wed-Thu; 9 a.m. on Fri-Sat and 9:30 on Sun.

Edgewater Fitness is a 41,000 square foot fitness facility that offers treadmills, bicycles, ellipticals, free weights and weight machines, but also over 50 group fitness classes each week, including Zumba, kettlebell, yoga, spinning, Tread & Sculpt, Pilates, Body Pump, step interval and more. They have childcare and a kids gym. Bathroom amenities feature plenty of lockers and hot showers. Flat monthly fee covers everything. Rates are three-month, six-month and year – prices vary depending on term length. Three day pass for local residents. In January, they are giving away a free gym bag for any new members.

East Coast Martial Arts in South River Colony Main Street offers classes for children, teens, adults and families as well as kick-boxing training. Click here for a two-week guest pass.  They offer training in Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art, kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. These martial arts feature sparring, discipline, self-awareness and control at the core of the training philosophy. The school also offers classes for women’s self defense as well as camps and bullying seminars.

Linda Copeland, at Breakthrough Fitness, is a personal trainer who primarily works out of Poston Fitness for Life in Dunkirk. Copeland works either one-on-one, with couples or in small groups. She can do so before or after work—or during the day. It depends on the needs of the client. Some of her stay-home moms or self-employed people like to work out during the day, she said. Copeland said that a private training studio is great for people who might be overwhelmed or intimidated by a gym atmosphere. A private gym is like “Cheers” she said, “it is a nice community-type atmosphere.” They’re kicking off a “Biggest Winner, Ultimate Thinner” fitness challenge on Jan. 4. It’s a $50 entry fee per person, in teams of four. Being part of a team is a great way to stay on track to meet your fitness goals.

Results University temporarily located in South River Colony Main Street is a 24-hour fitness center that specializes in fitness coaching and team training.  At Results U, FMS (Fitness Movement Certified) trainers will help you reach your fitness goals faster by tailoring a workout just for you. You’ll undergo a two-part fitness evaluation, and then, whether you want to lose a few pounds or layer on lean muscle, your trainer will put together a comprehensive fitness strategy to help you meet your goals. The online meal planner will help you align your nutrition goals too. Group fitness includes bootcamp, treading, Zumba, hot yoga, Pilates and firepower. Get a passkey for 24-hour fitness, so that you can work out any time of the day or night. They also have the Parisi Youth Training fitness center. mapoffitnessRennaissance Yoga is locally-owned, and offers yoga classes and seminars for all levels, from beginning to advanced. Classes are held at various locations around South County and are taught by Satyam, the founding director and class leader. He has been practicing yoga for 22 years, and teaching for 17. Classes typically run four weeks ($40), except Wednesday’s Community Yoga class in Galesville, which is a drop-in fee of $5. Check the website for a schedule of classes, which are held at various locations including the Northeast Community Center in Chesapeake Beach, St. James Parish Hall in Lothian, Christ Church in West River, Galesville Memorial Hall in Galesville and Black Belt Academy in Dunkirk.

South River Martial Arts offers classes for children and adults. Get fit and learn a little about self-defense, discipline, sport, exercise, combat philosophy and the ways of Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art. The practice incorporates more kicking than you might see in other forms of karate or kung fu, but also focuses on speed, agility, balance and stamina. It is both an anaerobic and aerobic exercise with elements of stretching. Students learn to spar, break boards, perform patterns or forms (a choreographed set of punches, blocks and kicks), as well as meditation, breathing and relaxation techniques.

Yoga 4 Life offers classes on Tuesdays at the Harbor Hills clubhouse in Davidsonville. The “Yoga for your Life” class starts at 9:30 a.m. and runs for 90 minutes. Lynn Matthews, owner of Yoga 4 Life, is not only a class instructor with over 3,000 hours of teaching experience, she also has 6,000 hours of teacher training under her belt.
