Child Custody Exchange in Harwood Turns Violent on Sunday Afternoon
Two people were struck by a vehicle, one person was hit with a baseball bat and another was wielding a 2 x 4 during a heated child custody exchange in the Maryland Manor Mobile Home Park in Harwood on Sunday afternoon, according to a police report from Lt. T.J. Smith of the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Two victims were taken to the hospital, neither was seriously injured. In all, four people were charged in the violence.
Police said that around 3 p.m. on Sunday, in the 1500 block of Flanders Lane, a woman, accompanied by her current boyfriend, later identified as Stephen Bassford, responded to a different address in the same mobile home park to drop off a child she has in common with Steven Wilson, Jr., her estranged husband.
Smith said that, during the child exchange, a verbal altercation between the woman and her ex-husband ensued. It became physical. At that time, Bassford got out of the vehicle with a baseball bat and hit Steven Wilson’s brother, Matthew Wilson, in the arm. Matthew Wilson then got a 2 x 4 and struck Bassford in the arm.
Bassford and the female then attempted to leave the area in their vehicle. Matthew Wilson hit the driver side window with the 2 x 4, shattering the glass. Bassford, in his attempt to leave, hit two parked vehicles, a bystander, and Matthew Wilson.
The bystander who was hit was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) with minor injuries. Bassford and the woman left the mobile home park. They were located nearby, the report said.
The woman, 22, was not identified by police, other than to say that she is from Hughesville. Domestic assault charges are pending against her. She was taken to Bowie Medical Center for treatment.
Stephen Guy Bassford, 32, of Hughesville, was arrested and faces first and second degree assault and traffic charges. He was taken to AAMC for injuries related to the assault. No booking photo was provided for Bassford.
Steven Chester Wilson, 25, of Harwood, was charged with second degree domestic assault charges.
Matthew James Wilson, 22, was charged with first and second degree assault charges.
