Chronic Disease Self-Management Instructors:The Department is looking for volunteers to becomeinstructors for the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. This six week (2.5 hours per week) workshop program, developed by Stanford University, will be taught at various places throughout Anne Arundel County, including BWMC, AAMC, senior activity centers, community centers, churches and libraries. The program teaches participants how to manage their chronic disease(s) through healthy eating, exercise, stress reduction and other self-management skills. No medical background is needed, but volunteers must be comfortable speaking in front of an audience. Training will take place from 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.June5, 6, 12, and 13, 2014at the Department of Aging and Disabilities, 2666 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. Volunteers must be able to attend all 4 days of training to become a certified program instructor. By the Bay 5K Family Fun and Walk, May 10, 2014
Volunteers are needed starting at 7:30 am on Sat., May 10, 2014 at Downs Park in Pasadena in order to get their course assignments and help setting up for the race and walk. The event is from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Volunteers will help by being a course monitor, helping to register racers and distribute race packages, set up concession table, etc. If you or your group would like to help with the race please contact Carolyn Ryan at 410-222-7313 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Bello Machre provides loving homes and support to people with developmental disabilities. Our volunteers open their hearts to develop friendships with the individuals we serve. We offer a variety of opportunities that are best suited to your talents, interests, and time. Whether it’s spending time with an individual scrapbooking, cooking, watching movies, or playing video games, lending a hand with yard work or gardening at one of our homes, or helping staff at our administrative office. Walk Like MADD is a family friendly 5K walk and a whole lot more including live entertainment and food, activities for kids, teens and parents, marketplace of products and services, ignition interlock demonstrations, contests, prizes, and more! Living Classrooms Foundation is a nonprofit organization that strengthens communities and inspires young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms.” On April 26, 2014, we are hosting our 5th Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival presented by Whole Foods Market, an environmentally focused celebration of Bluegrass in the Nation’s Capital, the Anacostia River, and our local Kingman and Heritage Island parks. National Aquarium Chesapeake Bay Initiative Habitat Restoration Projects
The ten-acre tidal wetland bordering Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine now serves as a refuge for many species of wildlife including sea ducks, heron, muskrats, and red-winged blackbirds. Join the Conservation Department at the National Aquarium in Baltimore at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to help clean up the bay. The National Aquarium in Baltimore is looking for community volunteers, ages 14 and older, to participate, rain or shine. Activities include debris cleanup, planting native marsh grasses, trail maintenance and more. Volunteers will help beautify Lake Waterford Park and protect the Chesapeake Bay through planting, spreading mulch, raking, clearing, and cleaning the main park area and woods surrounding the lake. Help control stormwater runoff and learn about rain-gardens, weed and plant garden areas, clean up underbrush, trash and other debris from Lake Waterford Park. Experts will be on site to discuss problems facing the Watershed. Tasks will be assigned. Individuals, families and groups are welcome to register to volunteer. Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult (1 adult per 6 children). Wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, work gloves, and if available: gardening tools (marked with your name) including rakes, trowels, hoes, etc. (some tools provided). Spa Creek Conservancy is looking for candidates/volunteers who may be interested in leadership positions in a very dynamic organization that is serving as the steward of Spa Creek. There is a near-term need for officers and committee chairs, including Chair for an Educational Outreach Committee. Volunteers are also needed to assist with Rain Garden and BayScapes Gardens next to the Chesapeake Children’s Museum, 25 Silopanna Rd, Annapolis. Volunteer tasks for the whole family include mulching, cleaning up the creek, installing ties along paths, creating garden and flower areas and much more. Volunteers of all ages are welcome from supervised youngsters to adult. Projects can be carved out for volunteers who want to come by at their convenience and take responsibility for a particular sub-task or project. We will “train” and assist in a smooth transition.
