This large event being held at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium from 12:00–6:00 PM, Sat., Sept. 13, 2014 features unlimited beer tastings of over 100 craft beers from over 40 regional and national artisan breweries. There will also be live music of every variety and great oysters on the half-shell along with other food. Volunteers are needed to pour for the breweries. This Fair is sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management, Citizen Corps, the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County, Lowe’s, and the AA County Local Emergency Planning Committee with the purpose of providing information to the public to prepare it for emergencies. The event will be held from 10 AM–2PM, Sat, Sept. 27, 2014 (rain or shine) at the Lowe’s at Quarterfield Crossing Shopping Center, 415 George Claus Blvd, Severn, MD 21144. Creating Communities, the leading arts service organization in Anne Arundel County for vulnerable and at-risk youth, is seeking paid mentors for the following positions: 1. Mentor, Youth Arts Fellowship – One Saturday per month, arts and life skills programming for creative/talented yet low-income teens. Additional responsibilities include family follow up, scheduling, and planning meetings; 2. Mentor, STAR Academy – Three afternoons per week at George Fox Middle School in Pasadena. Mentor and provide creative opportunities for at-risk middle school students; and, 3. Volunteers, After School Arts Program – Help low-income children succeed through the arts, 1.5 hours per week at Eastport United Methodist Church. The mission of The Light House is to help rebuild lives with compassion by providing shelter and services to prevent homelessness and empower people as they transition towards self-sufficiency. Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, front desk help and adult education programs. Pro bono professional volunteers are also needed with specialized skills such as accounting, dentistry, licensed therapists, law, and carpentry. Volunteers with trucks to transport items to the county dump are also needed. The hours are flexible for many tasks and training is provided. - 7:30 a.m., Sun., September 28, 2014, The 4th annual Annapolis Run for The Light House: The 4th annual Annapolis Run for The Light House provides scenic half-marathon and 5K routes along the trails of Quiet Waters Park and through the beautiful Chesapeake Bay-front community of Hillsmere Shores. The race start is 7:30 a.m., for the Half Marathon, and 7:45 a.m. for the 5K Jogging Joe Shafran Memorial Run. Volunteers are needed to assist on Race Day. Start The Adventure In Reading – Annapolis Inc. (STAIR)
Start The Adventure In Reading, is a proven reading and mentoring program designed to provide early intervention for at-risk second grade students in Annapolis. STAIR is looking for adult volunteers willing to tutor second grade students attending Annapolis City Public Schools twice a week for one hour after school during the school year. The tutor works with the same student for the entire year. All tutoring is focused on increasing reading skills using an educator-approved curriculum. STAIR currently tutors at six locations in the city of Annapolis. Two-hour new tutor training is provided in September prior to STAIR beginning on September 30th. U.S. Elite’s mission is to provide an avenue for young athletes to develop in track and field, so that they can have the opportunity to maximize their potential by sharing their gifts and talents in a sport that requires discipline, commitment sportsmanship, and an honest effort and to receive a debt-free education, while experiencing practical learning and academic enrichment in the global community to prepare them for the real world. There is a current need for professional volunteers to serve in the following positions: Board of Directors, lawyer, fundraiser, track coach, executive assistant, health and wellness coordinator, and grant writer. The goal of the Foundation is to provide avenues that directly benefit kids in need by partnering with professionals, volunteers, donors, program recipients, and other nonprofits whose focus fits the Foundation’s mission. We want to create a cycle of giving, and are always looking for new ways to help those in need. Our main programs at present are Christmas, Back to School, and Diaper Drives. There are always volunteer opportunities for all ages, and many families love to help out together. Volunteer opportunities change seasonally, but help is needed the week of August. 11-15, 2014 to pack and deliver backpacks to six different elementary schools in Anne Arundel County.
