The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is a regional non-profit conservation organization whose mission is to restore the Chesapeake Bay through collaborative engagement of communities, businesses, and other conservation groups in the Bay watershed. A wide variety of volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year. Current opportunities include support of communications efforts (including writing, and web, display, and document design), tagging and organizing our Flickr photo library, and helping to organize and/or staff restoration projects and events. In particular, part-time volunteers are needed to staff our reception desk, provide administrative and clerical assistance (includes research, data entry, answering phones, and mailings) and provide program/project support for the headquarters staff. - 5:30–9:00 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 18, 2014, Taste of the Chesapeake 2014: Each year, the Taste recognizes environmental leadership and provides a venue for the Alliance to showcase our progress toward Bay restoration, as well as, our projects for the next year. “The Taste” is a vibrant celebration of local food and drink, businesses, and music and a great opportunity to gather with an exciting mix of people who share a commitment to and passion about their rivers, their communities and the Chesapeake Bay. The Community Action Agency empowers, educates, coordinates, and assists, qualified people, including families, youth, children, the disabled and seniors in reducing poverty and building a better life for themselves. The agency’s Energy Assistance Program needs volunteers at least 18 years of age, who have great communication skills are enthusiastic and enjoy helping people. The volunteers will assist with answering questions applicants may have, filing and other secretarial duties, assisting with office events, and more. Volunteer tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers. - 9:00 AM– 4:00 PM, Sat., Oct. 11, 2014 AND Sat., Oct. 18, 2014, Tutor Training: The tutor training sessions will be held at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park and will cover both basic literacy and ELL (English Language Learner) instruction. Registrants must attend both sessions. There is a class size limit of 35, and our March training filled up quickly. This nonprofit organization helps families care for terminally ill loved ones in their homes or a home-like setting or wherever they need care. Volunteers play a vital role on the hospice team by providing patient care, serving as vigil volunteers, providing grief support, assisting administratively in our offices and in community outreach, helping at our resale shop, and more. Become a hospice volunteer if you are age 18 and up and willing to complete volunteer training. This volunteer, non-profit organization repairs and revitalizes homes and neighborhoods of low income families in Anne Arundel County, to include elderly, disabled, and veterans, so they may live in warmth, safety and independence. Skilled Volunteers are needed, to include plumbers, electricians, roofers, tillers, dry wall, carpet, floor installers, painters, and general workers. Also needed are volunteers to assist with fund raising, and serving on various activities committees for the Board of Directors. Teams are being recruited now to sponsor home modification projects throughout the year. ST Mary’s ESL Program is looking for volunteers for this coming school year – our 13th. We offer 7 levels of instruction 3 nights a week at St Mary’s High School. First semester classes begin on Tues., Sept. 9, and meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:45PM, until December. Each teacher is asked to commit to one class/one night a week, working as a lead teacher, assistant or mentor depending on background. Spanish-language ability is preferred for beginner classes only. Those with ESL or any teaching experience are encouraged to apply. The mission of The Wellness House of Annapolis is to help people affected by cancer and their family members recover their health and well-being through participation in a professional program of support, education and hope in a “home-like” environment. All of our services are offered free to cancer patients and their care givers. There are many different volunteer opportunities at Wellness House of Annapolis. All services are offered to members for free by our amazing volunteers. We need assistance with our gardens, clerical work, outreach, and hostessing. Guests will sample delicious offerings from local restaurants, dance to the hot sounds of award-winning Trio Caliente, and peruse dozens of fabulous silent auction items.
