The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Tutoring Program supports students in grades 6 through 12 who are in the academic middle. AVID tutors, age 18 and older, will be trained to work with small groups of students during the AVID elective class. These students have gone through an application process and have been selected to participate in the AVID Program at their respective school. Tutors will help students be successful by assisting them with problem-solving techniques, working collaboratively with other students, and serving as role models. Tutors would commit to at least one semester of tutoring at one of the AVID sites for a minimum of one hour per week, during the regular school day. Volunteers are needed on Mondays between 10 a.m.–12:00 p.m., at Lake Waterford Park in Pasadena. Join the Park Naturalist on Mondays for activities that include garden bed maintenance, All Sensory Trail support and much more! Plus learn how to identify the difference between invasive and native plants. Volunteers are also needed at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis to help remove encroaching weeds and invasive plants in the Reading and Butterfly Garden. This opportunity would be great for a group or team as a great team building activity. Dates are flexible and ongoing through September. Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails needs help to maintain flower beds along the B&A, WBA, and BWI Trails. The Fair is an all-volunteer nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization bringing family entertainment, competition and education to people of all ages in Anne Arundel County and surrounding areas. A large number of volunteers are needed from 9:00 am– 1:00 pm, Sat., Sept. 20, 2014 (rain or shine) to help with cleanup at Anne Arundel County’s Fort Smallwood and Weinberg Parks. Students can earn community service credits by participating in the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind. Established in 1991, this non-profit hunger relief organization provides free food and other essentials to people in need in Anne Arundel County and four counties on the Eastern Shore. Volunteers with trucks or vans are needed to pick up food from distribution centers, restaurants and others and deliver to food pantries, shelters and other locations serving the hungry, and assist with emergency food pantry and emergency baby pantry items. The Friends of Kinder Farm Park is a non-profit volunteer group of citizens working to enhance this county park in Millersville off of Jumpers Hole Rd. Volunteers are needed for the following:
- 9:00 am–5:00pm, Sat., Oct. 11, 2014, Fall Harvest Festival: Kinder Farm is seeking a large number of volunteers to help with the annual Fall Harvest Festival. Adults and students are needed to help in 4-hour shifts. Students, middle school age and older, are needed to run children’s activities with adult supervisors. Adults are needed to help with preparation, set-up, hayrides, concession sales, Bingo/auction and assisting youth volunteers. This nonprofit organization, run largely by patients with metastatic/Stage IV breast cancer, supports others and builds awareness about this disease, and raises money to fund research grants specifically for metastatic breast cancer. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available to support the organization and its mission. Assistance is needed with fundraising, website design and maintenance, and advertising in the media. - 11:00 AM–2:30 PM, Sun., September 7, 2014, The Avis Halbertadt Authors Luncheon: Volunteers in a variety of capacities are needed to help with this signature event where attendees will have the opportunity to meet, greet and dine with seven featured authors. The 5th annual event is being held at the Annapolis Doubletree Hilton and features book signing, luncheon, and a silent auction. ST Mary’s ESL Program is looking for volunteers for this coming school year – our 13th. We offer 7 levels of instruction 3 nights a week at St Mary’s High School. First semester classes begin on Tues., Sept. 9, and meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:45PM, until December. Each teacher is asked to commit to one class/one night a week, working as a lead teacher, assistant or mentor depending on background. Spanish-language ability is preferred for beginner classes only. Those with ESL or any teaching experience are encouraged to apply as well as those with a keen interest in working with students to help them learn/perfect their English.
