Can we Control Rising Atmospheric C02 and Climate Change? Speaker: Bert G. Drake, PhD Dr. Bert G. Drake is a retired plant physiologist at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, MD and was named Distinguished Research Lecturer by the Smithsonian Institution in 2005. The globe is heating up... There is clear and convincing evidence that rising atmospheric C02 and other greenhouse gasses cause the warming. Increased temperature and water vapor in the atmosphere lead to changes in climate patterns that can shorten winter, lengthen summer, increase the severity of storms, reduce the capacity of the land to support agriculture, and rising sea level. Recent projections by the Maryland Climate Change commission estimate the level of Chesapeake Bay will rise between 2 to 5 feet by 2100 with a loss of substantial land for agriculture, erode waterlines, and increase the impacts of storm damage to residential areas. Many of the effects of climate change are evident now. Can we control rising atmospheric CO2 and satisfy our ever increasing demand for energy from fossil fuels at the same time? members; nonmembers 7:00 pm Coffee/desserts 7:30 pm Program begins Reservations required. Galesville Heritage Museum The Story of Stores If you haven’t visited the Galesville Heritage Museum to view the exhibit “The Story of Stores,” there is still time. The Story of Stores exhibit will be on display until November 2. Why did such a small town have so many different stores throughout its history? This interactive exhibit, “The Story of Stores,” uses multimedia, video, photographs, and objects collected from the very shelves of those long-closed stores to tell the stories that answer that question. Museum visitors can view the video through a touch screen computer and monitor. Seven short videos are available on the touch screen. On display are many photos and artifacts from the many stores. View the new video and learn how the stores played an essential role in every childhood in the village and how these small stores served both as a social and economic anchor in the history of Galesville. Do you know who is in the photo and where the store was located? If you want to know more, stop by the museum before the exhibit is changed. The Museum is open on Sundays from 1:00-4:00 PM until November 2, or for a special tour or appointment, call 410-867-4731.
